August 8th, 2008 Illustration Friday

"Munching Canadians always made Myron's stomach feel poofy, but he just couldn't resist them."

In just under the deadline for this weeks topic "Poof!".

*Gruesome disclaimer:
Let me say up front, I have nothing against our fine neighbors to the north. I think Canadians are terrific, and have a really nice nation.

This piece is the result of a rather gruesome inside joke. A friend asked me about all the feet washing up on the shore of Vancouver. Appalled, I said I'd never heard anything about it. Turns out the story she had read referred to Vancouver B.C. and the Pacific Ocean, not Vancouver, Washington and the Columbia River, the town where I grew up. So, being the wise acre that I am, I drew this cartoon, and said it was probably a chubby shark, eating everything but the low-fat-content feet of Canadians.

The cops were calling it an industrial accident. But after going over the books at Uncle Maury's Institutional Grade Tuna, I knew that Maury's fishing fleet had recently expanded into new fishing waters. It was a turf, or surf war. I had a feeling a new gang was in town, and that is why Maury had gotten canned.

The topic this week was "canned".

July 25, 2008 Illustration Friday "Enough"

"I'd had enough. They'd killed my partner. They'd kidnapped my girl. But this... this was the last straw, they'd smashed Ma's cookie jar."

The topic this week is "Enough". I thought about having a smashed chair, and kitchen table in the scene, but it just looked too cluttered. Let me know what you think.

July 4th, 2008 Illustration Friday Fierce

They never give up, nor surrender to fatigue
These the boys, of the Babe Ruth Little League
Shorter than his bat
Weighing slightly more than his helmet
There was never a hitter quite as fierce
Standing at the plate, was Little Timmy Pierce
As ball left hand
Tension crackled in the stands
His bat did twitch and with a mighty swing
Lil' Timmy had hit the tar out of that pitch.

The topic today, was "Fierce." I drew this whilst listening to a game yesterday. I was working on it when Jim Thome hit a big two run homer in the 8th to seal the win for the White Sox. Big Jim is a fierce hitter indeed, so I wrote my little verse, and decided to use it for Illustration Friday.

The topic this week is Worry.

Meet Mr. and Mrs. Worrywart. Frank has heavy bags under his eyes because he gets very little sleep, due to excessive worry. He wears high-water pants in case there is a flood; and he's working on an ulcer. Vera is almost housebound, venturing out only for groceries and the mail. Today we see them cautiously making their way from the bedroom to the kitchen for breakfast. Anything could happen you know, anything at all.

May 4, 2008 Illustration Friday

Roland had lost track of more than one watermelon seed the night before. Now the question remained... where had the other seed gone!!

The illustration Friday theme this week is SEED. My first idea was to do a seed pod illustration, alla Invasion of the Body Snatchers, something with a husband standing in the shadows with a giant seed pod, while his wife reached over to turn out the bedside lamp. But time was limited, and this idea seemed more creative than an homage to a movie.

The Illustration Friday topic this week is Fail.

Emily and Robert refused to give up, despite their previous failed attempt. "More thrust, and larger wings to give us more lift, that's the answer." Emily stated emphatically. Robert grinned, and cinched his helmet down tight.

The theme this week for Illustration Friday is Save. I see there are lots of other piggy bank entries. I always try to think of something different, then when I post I see my idea at least 5 or 6 times over.

This week's topic is Pet Peeve.

It was bad enough that Cindy had been captured and enslaved as the monster's pet. The final indignation was that she'd been renamed Peeves. Monster thought it a hilarious play on words.

This is from a children's book concept I'm working on. Eventually I'm going to get published, and I have enough concepts in the works to keep me busy for years. Someday...

This weeks topic was Garden. I had a solid concept right away, but after I did my pencil drawing I decided to do something different. This time I tinted the drawings in Photoshop to give them a brownish sepia toned look. Then I did my usual color painting over the top, but this time I turned the opacity way down so it would be less dominant. Anyway, I hope you like it.

The cookie monster became invisible under the protective spell of "Blanky." The cookie monster's parents wondered where the munching, and giggling sounds came from, and wandered about the kitchen saying "Where are our cookies?! Oh where have they gone!?!".

This week's Illustration Friday topic was Blanket. As always I hope you will visit my website to view more examples of my work at www.ryanloghry.com, and please visit my retail store at www.ookybizniz.com, thank you for visiting.
