April 30, 2008 Creative Exercise Day 4

"Carl liked his women tall, and Eleanor loved a man who could dance. The two happily danced the night away, at the Hilltown High Society Ball and Sock Hop."

For background on this exercise, click here.

My topic for the challenge today was Dancing. And I liked it so much I think I'll use it again tomorrow. I really liked the first two characters I sketched today and didn't have time to do anymore. Man, this is fun!

Nice work on this one. Good facial expressions. Never seen an elephant so light on her feet!

wow, this is nice, what do you color with? I am bad in real life coloring, I do all my coloring in Photoshop, can you teach me some techniques?

These are great characters, Ryan! They look like they are having the time of their lives. The elephant especially, so light on her feet. What medium did you use, color pencil?
Skating below is also really well done. I like the progression of the poses, it's all so very natural!

Hey everyone! Thank you all so much for your comments.

Tom: Elephants are very light on their feet, despite thier size, and therefore natural dancers.

May & Monica: I use Photoshop to colorize pencil drawings I do in my sketchbooks. If I get some free time, I'll post a tutorial on my work process.

HI Ryan...thanks for popping by...

and to answer your question...
ATC stands for Artists' Trading Cards. (ATCs) are credited to a Zurich artist, M Vanci Stirnemann, who began trading sessions in Switzerland in 1997, as a way for artists to socialize and share their works/ideas with other artists

• The only rules associated with ATCs are that they are 2.5x3.5" in size and are exchanged not sold.

• The possibilities are endless... they can be 2D or 3D, original miniature works of art, no restrictions on mediums, can be part of a series, an edition, a multiple or an original.

Lisa G did a whole write up on these cards on her blog...

Fun stuff! and because of the size I take these everywhere I go now...and whenever I see something inspiring I pull one out and have some fun! plus this exercise inspired the whole idea of taking these with me each and every day...

have a wonderful night and I look forward to your work!

oh...forgot to add that that linework really doesn't have a name ...just something I have done for a while now and I think it my trademark...I can't stop adding it to all my illustrations.....

Hey Diana! Thanks for the info, I was wondering what those ATC's were.

For anyone who hasn't seen what I'm talking about, Diana has a really cool line technique. Check it out at Diana's blog.
